A third Bangladeshi policeman was hanged for the rape and murder of a 14-year-old girl in 1995. Police Constable Amirtlal Burman was executed at 12:01 am at the central jail of the northwestern city of Rangpur, jailer Mosharraf Hossain told AFP.
"Amirtlal was given a two-hour notice of his execution and from then till the end he didn't show any symptom of emotional outburst," he said.
Extra security measures were taken around the jail and Burman's body was handed over to his brother, he added.
Two of Burman's colleagues, Moinul Haque and Abdus Sattar, were executed earlier in September for the killing of the servant girl in the northwestern town of Dinajpur. On May 19, 2004, their appeals towards the sentence for the rape and murder of a 19-year old girl were rejected
Authorities prosecuted the police trio, leading to their conviction in 1997, after mass protests over the girl's killing including one in which seven people died.
"The execution of these policemen proves that criminals are not beyond the reach of justice even if they are police," said Rangpur superintendent of police, Azizul Haque.
