A young man was convicted and condemned to death for killing his wife in 1999.
District and Sessions Judge Bhabani Prosad Sinha handed down the death sentence to Mohammad Rafique, 28, of village Manikpur in Chakoria upazila.
According to the prosecution, Rafique married Sitara Begum,19, in January 1999. Soon she became pregnant but Rafique fell in love with another girl and that strained the relationship of the couple.
On August 30, 1999 Rafique proposed to take Sitara Begum to her parents' house. On way he brutally strangulated the wife to death and threw the body in the river Matamuhuri, where the police found it floating the following day.
The court examined 13 prosecution witnesses during the long hearing of the case before pronouncing the verdict.
