An Italian court ordered the extradition to Morocco of Moroccan cleric Mohammed Rafik wanted in connection with the 2003 Casablanca bombings after the court received assurances the suspect wouldn't face the death penalty if convicted.
The Italian Justice Ministry would still need to approve the extradition of Mohammed Rafik, said the attorney, Fausta Viola.
Viola said that a court in Brescia, northern Italy, recently ordered the extradition after receiving the assurances from Moroccan authorities. Under European Union rules, Italy cannot extradite suspects to countries where they risk execution.
Police in northern Italy arrested Rafik in October 2003 along with two other Moroccan men, Mohamed Raouiane and Daoud Ouaaziz. All three were accused of ties to Muslim extremist movement Salafiya Jihadia, which Moroccan officials linked to the Casablanca bombings and of collecting funds for terrorists in Morocco.
