Zailani Ahmad, 35, was sentenced to death by a court in Singapore after being convicted of killing Chi Tue Tiong, a 68-year-old caretaker, during a robbery on June 28, 2003.
The unemployed man's lawyers had argued that he was too high on sleeping pills to realise what he was doing, but the judge said they could not prove this.
Zailani's Indonesian girlfriend, named Rachel, with whom he lived on the floor above the old man was also wanted for the murder, but returned to Indonesia before she could be arrested.
Zailani was expressionless as the verdict was given.
Mr Chi's body, with a gaping head wound, was found on the blood-splattered floor next to his bed.
Consultant forensic pathologist Teo Eng Swee said there had been at least nine blows to the man's head, and that he had probably been hit with a wooden pestle. Based on the fractures and injuries to the brain, he said great force had been used.
Zailani had denied using a pestle in the attack, but admitted in his police statement using a wooden pole. In court, he said he could not recall whether he had used a weapon at all.
His lawyers Ismail Hamid and Sadari Musari had argued that at the time of the attack Zailani was not fully responsible for his actions because he had overdosed on sleeping tablets
According to Zailani, he planned only to steal from Mr Chi, but when the caretaker attempted to attack him, he retaliated.
But in his closing arguments, Deputy Public Prosecutor Christopher de Souza said: 'It's clear Zailani knew what he was doing and had control over his acts.'
He said Zailani's answers pertaining to his ransacking of Mr Chi's drawers, Rachel's warning that the old man was about to attack, his ducking to avoid Mr Chi's swipe with a spanner and beating him up showed clearly that his mental faculties were unaffected.
