As at December 31, 2002, 354 prisoners were on death row in Uganda according to the Prisons Department. Between 1990 and February 2003, 38 condemned prisoners were hanged in three execution sessions. Nine were hanged in 1993, 17 in 1996 and 12 in 1999.
In October 2003, prison authorities said there were more than 400 inmates on death row.
