BANGLADESH. EIGHT PEOPLE SENTENCED TO DEATH FOR MURDER

an Additional District and Sessions Court in Bangladesh sentenced eight people to death for killing an NGO official. Those sentenced to death were Delwar, Shafi, Lalu, Ishaq, Kamal, Alam, Nurul Alam and Helal, the first four of which were tried in absentia. According to the prosecution, ‘armed bandits’ gunned down Saiful Islam Chowdhury, manager of the Japanese NGO 'Waska', at Moheshkhali Channel on August 26, 1996 whilst on his way to Cox’s Bazar by boat.
