in Chandpur, Bangladesh, a man was sentenced to death in absentia for killing his young wife for dowry in remote village of Faridganj upazila about three years ago.
District and sessions judge Shahidul Karim pronounced the verdict against Abdur Rahim, 30, who has been on the run since the murder of his 22 year old wife Shilpi.
The prosecution said Rahim insisted Shilpi secure the promised dowry of Tk 1 lakh from her parents. When she failed, he beat her mercilessly at their home in Char Poa village of Faridganj upazila on October 23, 2005.
Shilpi died the following day.
