The Divisional Speedy Trial tribunal judge handed down the death penalty to Sirajul Islam, Rajib Ahmed, Sohel Rana, Masum, Kabir Hossain, Piash, Zamir and Manik. Of those sentenced to death Manik was still on the run and not present in court. According to the prosecution, due to a dispute over paternal property, Sirajul Islam, with the help of the other accused, murdered his brother Akhter Hossain, his pregnant wife Sabrina Afroza Juli and her two and a half years old daughter Arna. After the incident Sirajul Islam filed a case with local police saying that a group of bandits had killed his brother, his brother’s wife and their daughter during a night raid. Investigation conducted by the police revealed that Sirajul Islam himself had engineered the murder of his brother and family in order to gain their property.
In a separate case, a District Court in Kishoreganj sentenced to death Nasiruddin in absentia for the murder of a co-villager. According to the prosecution, Nasir of Bahadia village in the Pakundia district stabbed Nuruddin Master during a dispute on August 1, 2002. Nuruddin died on way to the hospital. Nasir went into hiding after the incident and had remained fugitive ever since.
