Cracking down on rat poison that had been used for mass murder, a court in China's Henan province issued a suspended death sentence to Fan Yuemin for making and selling the toxin. Just 5 milligrams - a dusting - of "dushuqiang" can kill a human being. It had been used in a string of mass murders in China despite a ban, state media reported.
The court determined that between March 2002 and May 2003, Yan Shoulian manufactured the poison and sold about 300 kilograms of it to Fan. Yan, working with others who also faced trial, also sold another 200 kilograms.
Yan was sentenced to life in prison while Fan was sentenced to death with a two-year suspension.
Yan and Fan were arrested in August 2003 on charges of illegally manufacturing, transporting and trading dangerous materials. The court, deciding their sentences, determined they caused "serious harm to public safety".
