eleven people were convicted and sentenced to death by a district court in Comilla, Bangladesh, for kidnapping and murder. Those convicted were: Ujjal Miah, Enamul Haq Munna, Yunus Miah, Maharaj Miah, Mohan Miah, Siraj Miah, Rab Miah, Ali Hossain, Nurul Islam, Abdul Halim and Senu Miah -- all residents of Sonarchar village. Only two of the accused -- Mohan Miah and Senu Miah -- were on the dock when 3rd Additional District and Sessions Judge SM Mojibur Rahman pronounced the verdict in a crowded courtroom. The remaining nine accused were tried in absentia.According to the prosecution, the accused kidnapped Abdul Kadir and his wife, Rawshan Ara Begum, from Kurer Ghat on their way home to Sonarchar village on March 11 in 2002. Later, the couple was taken to an unknown place, their bodies were found buried in two separate graves at Sonarchar village on March 19 following a confessional statement by an arrested person.
   It was alleged that the accused gouged out both eyes of Kadir, cut off his genitals and stabbed him to death. His wife was also killed brutally, being stabbed on various parts of her body. Earlier, terrorists had kidnapped and killed Humayun Kabir, the eldest son of the murdered couple. Police had arrested Mobarak Hossain in connection with the case. Angered by the arrest of Mobarak, his son together with others sentenced to death  murdered Abdul Kadir and his wife as they had previous enmity over a land dispute.
