Fast-track courts in Bangladesh had sentenced some 100 people to death in two years but not a single hanging was carried out due to delays in the appeals system, a law ministry spokesman said.
The courts, known as "speedy trial tribunals", began handing down death penalties in November 2002 for a range of crimes including murder and rape.
Although some human rights groups expressed concern, supporters of the "speedy" tribunals said they have deterred those who felt they could commit crime with impunity, using delays in the system to gain bail and ultimately avoid justice.
