Five notorious dacoits were sentenced to death, one of them in absentia, for murder of a housewife and her brother-in-law in the suburb of the town in May 1999.
Babul and his brother Talebul and associates Nazrul and Monir, aged between 35 and 40, were handed down the death penalty in a jam-packed court. Mujibul who remained fugitive was also awarded death sentence.
District and Sessions Judge Mohammad Ismail pronounced the verdict at 12 noon in the sensational murder case after lengthy trial.
According to the prosecution, Abdur Raquib, a peshkar and his sister- in-law were shot by the dacoits and hacked to death at dead of night in their house at village Silam Sarkar Chak on May 26, 1999.
