Gias Uddin, 20, was condemned to death for killing his brother Sabur Mia, 27, on July 20, 2000 during an altercation. The victim died on the way to hospital. (Sources: United News of Bangladesh, 17/11/2000) (cond metplo reordviomi) November 26, 2000: a court in Dhaka sentenced Abul Kalam, a 28-year-old man, to death for murdering his pregnant wife, Mahmuda Sultana Mummy, after her family failed to pay dowry money. Kalam's mother, Monwara Begum, and sister, Roksana Yasmin, were also sentenced to death for helping him strangle his 19-year-old wife in October 1999. The sentence for killing a woman unable to pay dowry is death in Bangladesh but this verdict was rare. The defence was to appeal.
