Gias Uddin, 20, was condemned to death for killing his brother Sabur Mia, 27, on July 20, 2000 during an altercation. The victim died on the way to hospital. Kalam's mother, Monwara Begum, and sister, Roksana Yasmin, were also sentenced to death for helping him strangle his 19-year-old wife in October 1999. The sentence for killing a woman unable to pay dowry is death in Bangladesh but this verdict was rare. The defence was to appeal.
