Thousands of people from Klerksdorp, Nigel and Carletonville marched in Pretoria from Church Square to the Union Buildings to protest against crime. Police estimated the crowd at between 10,000 and 12,000. Demands for the death penalty to be reinstated featured strongly on banners carried by protesters. Reflecting this sentiment was a placard in bright orange letters which said: "Bring back the noose!". In a memorandum handed to a representative of President Thabo Mbeki, they asked: "Why is our government incapable of enforcing the laws of the country to ensure all the citizens of their constitutional rights of safety and security in their daily lives?"That was also the plea of Adelaide Rebolo, whose son Hilario was murdered in a restaurant. "I want the death penalty back for murderers and rapists," she said.
