In Lebanon, a military court sentenced six men convicted of spying for Israel on Hezbollah and the Lebanese and Syrian armies to terms ranging from a year in jail to death.
A court statement said Hassan Hashem, a former official of Lebanon's Shi'ite Amal militia who was the most prominent of the defendants, had been sentenced to a period of three years of hard labour. One defendant tried in absentia, Raymond Abi Daher, received a death sentence.
The men were arrested earlier in 2002 and accused of running a spy network that provided the Jewish state with information on Hezbollah activities, as well as on Lebanese and Syrian military positions and certain Lebanese political figures and financial institutions, according to Reuters.
Prosecutors accused them of coordinating intelligence gathering through meetings with Israeli officials at European embassies. Seven men were charged in the case, but there was no mention of the seventh in the verdict.
