A court in Bangladesh condemned three men to death for the murder of a ten-year-old schoolgirl.
The Gaibandha District and Sessions Judge AKM Anowar Hossain pronounced the death sentence on Mehdi Hassan Modern, 19, Mohammad Shamim, 20, and Ariful Islam Asha, 19, in a crowded courtroom surrounded by heavy contingent of security personnel.
According to the prosecution the convicts used to tease the schoolgirl, Sadia Sultana Trisha , a student of class IV of Gaibandha Madhyapara Government Primary School.
On July 17 the accused young men tried to abduct Trisha while she was returning home from school. To save herself, the girl ran for safety and, feeling cornered, jumped into a pond beside the road. As Trisha did not know how to swim she drowned instantly. Local police and fire brigade people later recovered the body from the pond.
Trisha's father Abdus Sattar filed a murder case and people throughout the country demanded exemplary punishment for the killers.
The convicts standing in the dock broke down to tears as the judge pronounced the verdict in 3 minutes. They were given seven days to appeal to the High Court.
