the Tiruvannamalai district sessions court in India awarded the death penalty to R Rajan, a Sri Lankan Tamil Eelam Liberation Organisation (TELO) cadre. Rajan was also given four life imprisonment terms and two of his associates were awarded seven consecutive life imprisonment terms. Judge S Chandrasekaran convicted the three on January 20, 2007, however the verdict was delayed due to appeals. The prosecution alleged a 12 member gang of TELO members stormed the house of Pichaikara Gounder on July 27, 1988, and stole Rs 21,800. Three people were killed when the gang was stopped by police.
