The Regional Court in Brno, Czech Republic, decided not extradite Chinese citizen Wen-min Zhang to China on fears he could be executed. Not even the promise of the Chinese Justice Ministry that Zhang would not be condemned to death persuaded the court to change its verdict.
Zhang was suspected of robbery in China. However, he denied the charges saying that the accusation was a frame up as he opposes the regime in China.
"I am very grateful to the Czech Republic for not extraditing me. Another decision would mean a death to me," Zhang said. China, requesting Zhang's extradition, was not able to explain what crime he had exactly committed.
One Chinese request says that he was involved in a robbery on a fast train en route Beijing-Moscow years ago.
However, in another document the Chinese side claims that Zhang committed a robbery in a hotel in Moscow. Asked by the court, the Chinese ministry did not explain this discrepancy.
From the available documents it is, however, clear that the seven alleged accomplices of Zhang were sentenced to death and executed.
Zhang gave another explanation as to why China demanded his extradition. He said that he supported the students demonstrating at the Tien An Men Square in Beijing in 1989.
As an owner of two restaurants, he brought food and tea to the demonstrators and he even drove some of them to the square.
