It was revealed that Egypt's top military state security court commuted to life imprisonment the death penalty imposed in his absence on Islamist leader Hamed Abbes.
Abbes had been charged with involvement in various terrorist activities in 1997 and complicity in the assassination of the deputy governor of Qena region in northern Egypt.
Abbes took refuge in the United States but was handed over to Egypt in December 2003 after having been tried and sentenced to death in his absence in 1999. Under Egyptian law, he was retried after his return to the country.
The prosecutor demanded confirmation of the death penalty but the court imposed life imprisonment.
