Li Ping from Haozhou city, Anhui province, was sentenced to death by Haozhou Intermediate People's Court in February last year for the murder of farmer Li Jinggang in 1993.
According to Xinhua, police arrested Li Ping in March 2000 when he was working in Wenzhou, Zhejiang province, and accused him of being responsible for the death of Li Jinggang seven years earlier.
Police claimed that a cousin of Li Ping, who was a murder suspect in a separate case, had named him as committing the 1993 murder, with the cousin's information helping him to receive a lighter sentence for his own crime.
Li Ping denied he had anything to do with Li Jinggang's death and maintained he made the confession under torture by Haozhou police. Li Ping, who was penniless, was initially unable to appeal against his sentence. Xinhua said he won an appeal last May through legal aid.
The report said his lawyer found that Li Ping was working in Yuncheng City, Shanxi province, at the time of the murder and could not have been responsible for Li Jinggang's death.
