Li Yushu, former vice-mayor of Leshan in southwest China's Sichuan Province, was executed after being convicted of abusing his authority to take bribes valued at 8.9m yuan (1.1m US dollars). Li was accused of illegally accepting the cash from 1996 to 2001 by abusing his power and position as vice-mayor, the head of the communications bureau, the head of a communications development company, and the chief of construction of a bridge in Leshan. Li had been sentenced to death, deprived of political rights for life and had his assets confiscated by an intermediate people's court ruling in early 2002.
