Liu Zhigeng, a Chinese police officer, was given a suspended death sentence for beating a detainee to death and burying his body in secret to avoid discovery. Liu received his sentence at the Langfang Intermediate People's Court in central Hebei province, which also handed down prison terms to four other officers. The incident took place in April 2001 at the Kangxianzhuang village police station, when the five officers, led by Liu, were alerted to the apparent assault on a woman. The police officers took in the suspected perpetrator but could not get him to talk, and subjected him to physical abuse. One day later, the officers found him dead in his cell and tried to cover up their crime by burying the body at a construction site nearby.
