Martin Burnham, an American missionary, held by Muslim rebels for more than a year, was shot dead in the Philippines during an operation to free him and his wife, Gracia Burnham who was wounded during the rescue on the southern island of Mindanao.
Another hostage, a Filipina nurse, also died during the raid by US-trained special forces against members of the Muslim extremist Abu Sayyaf rebel group, which is linked to Osama bin Laden's al-Qaeda network.
Martin and Gracia Burnham, of Wichita, Kansas, and Ediborah Yap were kidnapped in May 2001 by Abu Sayyaf. They were the last still held of dozens of captives seized over the past year. Others were beheaded and some escaped or were released.
