On September 22, as part of a crackdown on crime ahead of the 50th anniversary of communist rule a further 26 executions were carried out in the southwestern city of Chongqing

On September 22, as part of a crackdown on crime ahead of the 50th anniversary of communist rule a further 26 executions were carried out in the southwestern city of Chongqing. On the authority of the Chongqing Higher People's Court and Supreme People's Court, Wei Jian and Zhong Bangde were among 26 criminals to be executed. The 26 were convicted of armed robbery, rape, murder, drug smuggling and other crimes. Southern Guangdong province also planned to execute 238 criminals before the celebrations. The Guangdong Province Supreme People's Court declared the province would hold 57 public rallies to announce sentences for 818 convicted criminals.
