PNG's leading daily newspaper, the Post-Courier, called for the introduction of public hangings following a bizarre double murder of a mother and her toddler daughter.
With the front pages splashing daily reports of killings, bashings and widespread chaos around the country during the national elections, one unsolved crime report has shocked the city's normally unshockable citizens.
The Post-Courier reported: "Daure John and her daughter, aged 3, were senselessly hacked to death last Wednesday night and their bodies found by relatives."
The Post-Courier said in an editorial: "The killers are criminals who deserve no sympathy from anyone. The only treatment they deserve is to be hanged in public for this most horrible of all crimes."
Papua New Guinea has the death penalty on its statute books but it has never been invoked.
