Police in Liaoning province shot dead a fellow officer after he allegedly gunned down five people, including his mother-in-law, at a bathhouse, state media reported.
Zhang Guoyu, 31, was killed after he refused to surrender during a stand-off with police in Suizhong county.
"The case is still under investigation, (we have yet to) determine the cause of the attacks and the identities of the victims are still being confirmed," an officer of the Public Security Bureau in Suizhong said.
Another officer told Reuters that the tragedy was due to a family dispute.
"Obviously it was a family feud," the officer was quoted as saying.A series of violent crimes involving police officers using firearms has received widespread media coverage on the mainland in recent years. In February, a police officer in Shandong province was sentenced to death for killing a food store owner he had argued with.
