Rustam Ubaydullayev, a 48-year-old inhabitant of Dushanbe, was sentenced to death in Tajikistan for mugging a UN military observer in February 1999. The attack took place near the UN building in central Dushanbe. The criminal broke into the victim's car and demanded money from him. Not satisfied with the amount of money, the criminal threatened the victim with a knife and forced him to drive home. The UN employee managed to jump out of the car whilst it was travelling and alert a nearby police patrol. Within a few hours of the incident the criminal was detained.
