The Ankara State Security Court [DGM] of the First Instance sentenced two men to death and a third to a prison term of 20 years for their role in the Sivas incidents [when 37 people were killed during an Alevi cultural festival].
Judge Orhan Karadeniz condemned Ali Kurt and Meyut Atalay were to death for attempting to disrupt the constitutional order through the use of force. Durmus Tufan, though found guilty of the same charges, was sentenced to 20 years because he was a minor at the time.The Supreme Court of Appeals had previously annulled the death sentences concerning the three, though it had approved the death sentences passed on another 31 suspects in the Sivas incidents.
