The cabinet of ministers approved draft amendments to the Criminal Code, Criminal Law and the law on the enactment of the criminal law in order to bring this legislation in line with the international protocol on the abolition of the death penalty.
The death penalty will be crossed out from the criminal law's Article 118: murder with unmitigated circumstances.
Latvia has acceded to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, passed on 16 December 1966. Currently, a bill is being worked out so that Latvia can accede to the covenant's protocol aimed at the abolition of the death penalty.
