The head of the Tabliq muslim sect, Sheikh Sulaiman Kakeeto, said he was opposed to the appeal by condemned inmates in Uganda to abolish the death penalty.
"I cannot support those people (inmates). I support the death penalty. If someone kills another he should also be killed," Kakeeto said, citing the teachings of the Koran.
A total of 398 inmates on the death row had signed a constitutional petition against the death penalty, saying it was inhuman, degrading and unconstitutional. Kakeeto said Islam has a law which allows the death penalty for people who commit murder, witchcraft and adultery.
"As long as there is enough evidence to prove that someone has committed a crime punishable by death, then he should be killed," he said. He said the Koran was a divine law which cannot be changed by wishes of man like the secular laws.
"The secular laws have so many contradictions because of changes. But Allah's laws cannot be contradicted. If you divert from Allah's word, you will fall in trouble." Kakeeto said.
He added that according to the Koran, God said that people will live in peace and harmony only by the way of the law of an "eye for an eye."
