The Lebanese army said it was holding 1,488 members of the disintegrated Israeli-backed South Lebanon Army (SLA) militia who surrendered during the withdrawal of Israeli forces from south Lebanon. The army said in a statement that it had already referred 200 "collaborators" to military courts and the rest would be handed over in the next few days.Collaboration with Israel can be punished with the death penalty, but official sources said most of those convicted ere likely to be jailed for a few months.
