The Nkongsamba High Court in Cameroon's Littoral province sentenced to death Laure Huguette Kinding Yango, a 24 year old nurse, for spreading AIDS. She had been found guilty of inoculating the children of her ex-boyfriend with AIDS and the Hepatitis B virus. "Le Messager" newspaper said the offence was committed on 24 January 2002, when Yango lured her former boyfriend's children, a boy and a girl, and injected them with the AIDS virus, under the pretext of vaccinating them against tuberculosis and tetanus. She was arrested the same day by police acting on a tip off. Police investigations showed the children's father had promised to marry the nurse after two years of cohabitation but failed to inform her that he was already married. Further tests showed that Yango had AIDS, while the kids' father, who was not named, proved sero-negative. The High Court also ordered the nurse to pay an undisclosed amount as compensation to the children's' parents.
