The state of Oklahoma executed Tyrone Peter Darks, 39, who shot his wife to death nearly 10 years ago. Darks was pronounced dead at 6:08 p.m. at the Oklahoma State Penitentiary in McAlester. He was charged with the Aug. 7, 1994, shooting death of Sherry Goodlow, his 26-year-old ex-wife. Darks fought his impending death up until the last possible minute. The 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals last week granted an injunction and stay of execution after Darks' attorney argued on civil rights grounds that the state's use of lethal injection was cruel and unusual punishment barred under the Eighth Amendment. But the U.S. Supreme Court voted 5-4 late Tuesday afternoon to reject the claim and the stay and injunction were lifted. Darks becomes the 1st condemned inmate to be put to death in Oklahoma this year, and the 4th in the USA
