a former pyschiatric patient's hope to be sent to hospital for treatment was dashed after the Court of Appeal in Malaysia upheld his conviction and death sentence for stabbing his pregnant girlfriend in an incident eight years ago. Justices Tengku Datuk Baharudin Shah Tengku Mahmud, Datuk Wan Adnan Muhamad and Datuk Sulong Matjeraie unanimously rejected Adnan Mat Jusoh's appeal to set aside the conviction and death sentence imposed on him by the Kota Baharu High Court on May 20, 2004. They held that there were no grounds to allow the appeal as they could not find any errors made by the High Court in rejecting Adnan's defence that he was under the influence of drugs and mentally unstable at the time of the offence. Adnan was found guilty of murdering Mastura Kamarul Jamal, 28, at an unnumbered house in Kampung Pasir Jelatang, Kubang Kerian, Kelantan at 11.30 on Jan 6, 2000. Adnan's counsel, P.Dorairaj said Adnan had a history of insanity and was treated at the psychiatric ward 11 years before the incident. Adnan was admitted to hospital on Dec 8, 1989, for abnormal behaviour after he was found to be wandering aimlessly, being destructive at home and attempting to assault his father.
