A National Dadah Agency report said 18,043 offenders were arrested under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and Dangerous Drugs Act (Special Preventive Measures) 1985 in the first nine months of 2001.
This was an increase of 40.8 per cent compared with the 12,813 offenders arrested in the corresponding period in 2000.
Of those arrested in 2001, 1,405 will be tried under Section 39B of the Act which carries the death sentence and 2,958 under section 39A which carries a life sentence.
