Five people were sentenced to death in two separate murder cases by fast-track tribunals in Dhaka under the Woman and Child Repression Prevention Act.
Speedy Trial Tribunal-1 passed the death sentence on four people for killing a teenage girl, Kajal, in city's Demra area on November 3, 2002, tribunal sources said.
In a jam-packed courtroom, Judge Shahed Noor Uddin pronounced the verdict on Nanu Miah, 30, Mohammad Kabir Hossain, 28, Mohammad Din Islam, 28, and Jahirul Islam alias Bhutto, 22.
According to the prosecution, Nanu, the victim's maternal uncle, called the girl from her house and took her to a paddy field. The four stabbed Kajal to death after rape and threw her body into the canal. The body was recovered after three days .
In the other case, Judge Zahangir Alam Mollah presiding over Speedy Trial Tribunal-4 gave the death penalty to Nazrul Islam, 28, for killing his wife, Milon Akther, in the city on August 12, 2002.
Nazrul chopped his wife to death after tying her legs and hands.
