Judge Shahed Noor Uddin of the Speedy Trial Tribunal sentenced to death five men and also sentenced a man accused of abetting the murder to life in prison. The six were convicted over the shooting of Mohammad Mizanur Rahman, alias Mizan, an activist in the youth wing of Prime Minister Khaleda Zia's Bangladesh Nationalist Party, in Dhaka in May 2002. Four men - Yasin Khan Palash, alias Kala Palash; Abdul Mannan, alias Milon; Sujan (eds: one name) and Mithu - were in the courtroom as the sentence was read out. The fifth, identified as Lenin, a fugitive, was sentenced in absentia.
