the UPDF 4th Division Court Martial in Uganda sentenced three soldiers attached to the 5th Battalion to death by hanging for murdering two chicken thieves. Prosecution said privates Michael Okwir, Joseph Baguma and Godfrey Lubwana on June 2, 2006 arrested two civilians identified as Wilfred Kinyera and Joel Oryem of Pabwor Parish in Bungatira Sub-county, Gulu District and shot them dead. 'Lubwama, Baguma and Okwir caused the death of Kinyera and Oryem by shooting, contrary to sections 188 and 189 of the Penal Code Act,' prosecution said. The chairman of the division court martial, Lt. Col. Eugene Ssebuggwawo, said: 'It leaves no doubt in the minds of court that prosecution has proved the ingredients of a murder charge. The evidence is overwhelming and the trio accordingly convicted and charged. It's your right to appeal to the General Court Martial against this ruling within 14 days,' he added.
